About Ford Cars

The Ford brand of motor vehicles was founded by Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan, in 1903. Early on, the company became known for the modernization of the manufacturing process, including the development of the assembly line, as much as for its vehicles. In 2019 it was ranked eighth among the largest auto manufacturers in the world with a $36 billion valuation and about 200,000 employees worldwide.

Its F-150 pickup truck is the best selling vehicle in the United States and the longest-running model in its lineup. Its Mustang model is a runner-up in a completely different category, performance vehicles, with production from 1965 to present turning out 10 million of the muscle cars in just over 50 years. The corporation is multinational, with divisions in smart mobility and finance.

Interesting Facts About Ford

1
The founder of Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford, was an innovator and the challenging individual who pursued many avenues in developing his products. Rather than relying on others to supply certain products needed for the production, he attempted, among other things, to create a rubber manufacturing community called Fordlandia in an unsettled area of Brazil.
2
Henry Ford was a curious character and relentless inventor but also a racist and anti-semite, having purchased a newspaper to publish anti-Jewish rants and was complimented by Adolph Hitler in Mein Kampf. Ford also sought to promote square dancing to counter the influences of jazz music and encouraged Ford dealers to host traditional musicians.
3
Henry Ford worked for and became close friends with inventor Thomas Edison, and the two had adjoining winter estates in Florida where they experimented with plants and other materials to develop new sources of raw materials for their industries.
4
In recent years Ford Motor Co. has produced vehicles under the model names Ford and Lincoln but has owned other brands including Mazda, Land Rover, Jaguar, and Volvo.
5
Ford vehicles are ubiquitous in the United States where it sold over 6 million models in 2016 alone; there remain a large number of operational Model T Fords still on the road (the company made 4 million in the years 1908-1927).
6
The Ford Motor Co. remains family-owned, and the current CEO, William Clay Ford Jr., owns the very first vehicle it ever sold, back in 1903.
7
Prior to 1939, Ford’s factories were powered by burning animal and human waste.

How to Identify and Decode Ford VINs

1-3

WMI

The first three digits of all U.S. VINs are known as the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI). The WMI is used to identify the specific manufacturer of a vehicle. The WMI is assigned by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and is regulated by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA). Vehicles can always be checked for safety recalls by visiting the NHTSA website and entering the vehicle’s 17-digit VIN.

Ford is one of the largest vehicle manufacturing companies in the world and has factories in many countries. The WMI codes Ford uses are as follows.
